Local Community Engagement Programme

The CASCADES Expedition’s scientific programme will be conducted in living Arctic environments. During the expedition, the ship will sail close to inhabited areas, and scientists will study waters and lands that are important to and are used by local communities for fishing and hunting.

Leg A

As part of its commitment to conducting a respectful and inclusive expedition, the CASCADES team collaborated with SEDNA and SIKUMUT, whose expertise helped integrate Greenlandic perspectives, traditions, and community priorities into the project.

The community engagement programme is structured in three phases:

  1. Pre-expedition visits to the key communities of Ilulissat, Uummannaq, Kullorsuaq, and Qaanaaq;
  2. Science days organised during Leg A of the CASCADES Expedition, providing opportunities to share the research conducted on board with local communities while enabling scientists to engage directly with local knowledge, traditions, and perspectives;
  3. Post-expedition sharing of the scientific results with the participating communities.

Here you can find summaries of SEDNA’s reports from their visits to: Uummannaq, Kullorsuaq, Qaanaaq.

Leg B

A visit in the school of Iqaluit will be organised at the departure of the CASCADES Expedition Leg B, as well as other activities while at sea. More information to come soon!
